Blog # 1 - Artist Statement

I come from a family of artists (playwrights, directors, actors) which is why I have had the opportunity to get hands on experience in almost every aspect of film, television and theater. I started working as an actor in theater when I was only five years old, touring all around the world. However personally I thought of myself as a 'behind the scenes' person which is why during my tours instead of acting I was more fascinated by the technical marvels that made the shows possible. This became the reason that in the following years I became the head lighting technician for the whole production. Later on I started working as a graphic designer, designing posters, banners and advertisements for theatrical productions and television series. But the most interesting work I did as a student of graphic design was digitizing and enhancing hundreds of old paintings from 'Sikh' history for a government project. After that I worked on about five mini-series documentaries as a cinematographer for television. Finishing high school in India I joined an Indian-American TV channel based in New York as an Associate Producer. This job introduced me to the corporate side of the television industry.

I understand that movies for most people provide an escape from their "normal" life and they just want a roller coaster of entertainment and fun. Keeping that in mind I still aspire to make films not solely for entertainment purpose but also at the same time are thought provoking. I want to work on issues which have a considerable impact on society or a individual but have been buried due to social, religious or political fear. I believe being a film maker is a great responsibility because it has the power to transform the thinking of millions of people watching. I am inspired by all films and directors because every individual or film is unique in its style and approach to a subject.

“Individuality is the most precious gift an artist can give to art” – Harshvir Latta.
